12-Apr-2011 - Abu Dhabi, UAE

Dubai - It was very thoughtful of Noel to take a day off to spend a day with us. Hope he can visit Melbourne one day, so we can return the favour. ‘Stopped by at his place in the morning until lunch time to do the laundry…. Isa, Lukas and Justin had a swim while waiting for our laundry to finish.

Left Noel’s house at lunch time… first stop at IBN Batutta
Mall to meet Peter again… Had lunch there and had a bit of walking to see the interior of the mall representing different countries like Tunisia, India China, etc. Took a few photos and left… off to Abu Dhabi with Noel.

Abu Dhabi Grand Mosque

At the time of writing this blog, it is said to be the largest mosque in UAE and eight largest in the world. It is also known as Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, named after Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founder and the first president of UAE. Sheik Zayed was also buried next to the mosque where a prayer is currently held daily (according to one of the guards). Photos are allowed inside and outside the Grand Mosque but not at the place where Sheik Zayed body was laid.

Around a hundred meters from the mosque is a security guard with abaya hanged beside his station. Women wearing short skirts will be asked to wear an abaya to enter the yard of the Mosque. My clothes received an approval from the first guard but I had to wear the abaya later on. This is required to be worn for all ladies wishing to go inside.

The mosque truly deserves its name… It’s really grand inside… the wall, carpet, chandelier, etc. At the moment, the mosque has the world's largest carpet from Iran and the world's largest chandelier from Germany made from one million Swarovski crystals. It has 28 types of marble and 24-carat gold throughout.

Ferrari World
We were caught up
in traffic in the Abu Dhabi city centre while we’re heading to Ferrari World. But we made it in the end. It was quite a surprise seeing heaps of ladies in group, wearing full black robes, showing nothing but their eyes, enjoying their time taking the rides in the Ferrari World. I overheard that a number of them were actually from Saudi Arabia. Interesting, eh… not all of them are so conservative after all.

We had a little bit of fun going to some of the rides open at the time when we came in. It's a little bit disappointing that the world's fastest roller coaster was closed. We left the place around 30 mins past 10 pm and headed back to Dubai.

Chowking, Dubai
Noel kindly drove us to Chowking to have our late dinner. A good meal from Filipino fast food in Dubai concluded our Dubai trip. Then off to Holiday Inn Express-Airport to spend our last night in Dubai before our flight to Switzerland.

Thanks a lot, Noel (and also to Angelo). We greatly appreciate your time and hospitality.

  1. Magnificent. The Mosque itself is one amazing work of art. Looking at it you can't help but be amazed at its grandeur.
