13-Apr-2011 Basel, Switzerland

Had a safe flight from Dubai to Zurich. Went to Europcar to get the car that we had booked earlier via internet… got a compact Mercedes Benz car, just enough for the 3 of us.

Mon was not in his best condition but was able to drive. We drove from Zurich to Basel to see the Munster Cathedral before going to Luzern to spend our first night in Switzerland.

At Basel, we drove around to look for parking space… There were bicycles everywhere, and with the place itself, we feel like we’re in the ‘old black and white movies’. The ambience was really cool… it’s different from other places we had been… We found a parking and the first thing that caught our attention is the presence of the Philippine flag and a construction nearby with crane. Good spot as we’re able to use them as landmarks going back to the car after strolling around Basel.

Highlights:

Market in front of Historisches Museum.

Marketplatz, where u can buy street food .. sausages of course.

Post office. Mon dropped by at the post office to send a post card to his colleagues.

Munster Cathedral, the left tower is under construction. It's a red sandstone architecture and cross-shaped intersection on the main roof (roof can be seen at Google Earth). It is originally a Catholic Cathedral built between 1019 - 1500 and now a reformed Protestant.

Crucifixes, altar, images of Virgin Mary and saints and many valuable arts/religious painting were destroyed during the iconoclasm of the Protestant Reformation in 1528 and 1529.

View of Rhine River from Basel.

The Church of St Elizabeth, of neo-gothic architecture built in 1857. An open church used for spiritual, cultural and social activities.

Stopped over in a small Pizza fast food restaurant and had Hawaiian and Curatro Stagione pizza for dinner before returning to where our car was parked and continue our journey to Luzern.
